Childhood Inspirations and Early Aspirations
Starting a career as a young intern can feel overwhelming, especially in a fast-paced and ever-evolving industry. Finding a sense of belonging during these early years can be complex, particularly when you are still discovering your true passion and career purpose. For many people, inspiration begins in childhood, whether it came from a favourite movie or admiration for a relative’s profession. Sometimes it was their wardrobe, the confidence they carried, or the impact they made that planted a seed of aspiration.
Motherhood as Motivation
Life doesn’t always unfold according to our teenage dreams. Plans shift and new responsibilities arise. For me, becoming a mother didn’t put my dreams on hold, it fueled them. My motivation deepened, as I wasn’t just working towards a future for myself anymore, but also for the little one who now looks up to me.
Navigating Education and Early Career Choices
After matriculating during the uncertain times of the Covid-19 pandemic, I found myself working in a call centre, which was a practical choice at the time. Six months later, a study opportunity opened. Human Resource Management was my first choice, but due to high demand, a lecturer recommended Marketing. I took the chance and two years later, I completed my N6 certificate in Marketing Management.
The Job Hunt Struggles
Then came the hard part: the job hunt. Searching for internships, facing rejections, and navigating periods of self-doubt took a toll. It felt like a series of uphill battles, filled with soul searching and emotional exhaustion.
A Spark of Hope with CapaCiTi
In August 2024, I received a call from CapaCiTi. My college had referred me for a 12-month learnership programme. It was the first spark of hope, and proof that God truly has a plan, even when we can’t see it right away.
Finding Family at Big Beard Web Solutions
Two months into the programme, another opportunity knocked – an interview with Big Beard Web Solutions. This marked a turning point. I immediately sensed a strong company culture rooted in values like inclusion, mentorship, and family. As our founder Nathan Simons puts it, “We are a company that takes care of families.” That message resonated deeply with me.
What stood out even more was Nathan’s genuine belief in nurturing young talent. He encourages interns to explore different aspects of their field until they find their niche and then supports them in developing it. I’m still in the process of discovering my true place in the marketing world, though I know I’m in the right environment to grow, learn, and find my confidence.
Belonging, Growth, and Faith
Home is where you’re comfortable, but staying in your comfort zone won’t help you grow. While it’s essential to find your sense of belonging, it’s equally important to understand that growth requires patience, faith, and a willingness to be stretched.
Change is inevitable. We may plan our paths carefully, yet ultimately, things unfold in God’s time and God’s way. This journey has taught me that flexibility, gratitude, and a growth mindset are some of the most valuable tools in navigating the professional world.
Gratitude and Looking Ahead
I am incredibly grateful to my team at Big Beard Web Solutions, and to Nathan for this opportunity. The constructive feedback, shared wisdom, and daily support have already made a lasting impact on my journey. I look forward to continuing to learn, evolve, and discover where my niche lies in the exciting world of marketing.
