designing for web development

Before I entered the world of digital marketing, the phrase web design felt like this mysterious, artsy profession. I imagined a group of creatives dragging shapes across a screen while sipping iced tea and tossing around words like “UX” and “aesthetic” with effortless flair. I never really knew where design ended or how it somehow transformed into a living, working website. Since entering this world though, I have learned that there is a lot more to it. The more I discover, the more intrigued I become. If I get another go at life, I am definitely signing up for a proper web design course, and web development too while I am at it.

What I have come to realise is that web design sets the foundation for everything that follows. It is the blueprint, the choreography before the first line of code is ever written. At Big Beard Web Solutions, I have seen how design really does set the stage for development, and I am excited to share a bit of what that process looks like from the inside.

Tools That Changed the Game

Design handoff used to involve tools like Zeppelin, but those days are behind us. These days, everything happens through Figma, which not only supports design but also includes a developer mode that provides all the specs needed for coding, from colours and fonts to measurements.

More Than Just Pretty Pictures

Designers don’t just create something that looks good, they also prepare everything developers need to bring the site to life. Assets like icons and images are exported and neatly stored in the client’s Drive folder for easy access. Whenever possible, a style guide is put together to keep fonts, colours, buttons, and hover effects consistent. This guide acts like a rulebook, helping everyone stay on brand.

Collaboration That Counts

The handoff isn’t a simple handover. Designers stay involved, ready to help with resizing assets or tweaking visuals when developers hit snags. Frequent check-ins and internal review calls help keep the project aligned with the original design vision. Designers and developers work with a clear understanding of each other’s limitations and strengths, turning the process into a genuine team collaboration, not just a handoff from one to the other.

Designing for All Devices

Designers focus mainly on desktop layouts but always consider responsiveness. They plan how elements will shift or stack on mobiles, tablets, and even smartwatches. Developers then ensure the site adapts smoothly across all devices.

Design Is an Ongoing Journey

Web design doesn’t end at launch. There’s always room to refine and improve based on user feedback and new ideas. Design is more of a continuous conversation than a one-time project, with developers and designers working together long after the site goes live.

What’s Next?

Learning about web design has been eye-opening, but the real excitement for me is what happens next: Web Development.: What are the do’s and don’t when developing a site? What challenges do developers face behind the scenes?

If you’ve ever been curious about how websites are built beyond the pretty icons and pictures, stick around.
