Some people chase dreams. Others level up at them. Jamie Leigh Govender, our Marketing Manager and resident “Vibe Artist”, is one of the latter. She combines her marketing skills with a love for technology, especially Cloud solutions through our AWS partnership, while keeping the team motivated, inspired, and often laughing at her witty humour.
From Gaming to Cloud: Jamie’s Journey
Jamie did not take the usual path into tech. She started as an English major, gaming on the side, and fascinated by the psychology behind advertising, noticing how colours, images, and people influence feelings. Somewhere along the way, she discovered her passion at the intersection of marketing and technology. Within days of joining Big Beard Web Solutions, she earned her AWS Cloud Practitioner certification. That was just the beginning. Her career is about connecting people, technology, and storytelling, and she does it naturally, with no cheat codes required.
Marketing Manager and Vibe Artist
Jamie keeps our marketing team sharp and energised, never afraid to voice her opinions or advocate for her people. She also celebrates the team’s wins and shows appreciation in small but powerful ways. One of her signature habits is ending daily stand-ups with “love you guys, bye.” At first, it seemed like a slip of habit, the kind you say to family or friends. Over time, it became clear that it’s done intentionally, creating a warmer, more connected workplace. She also normalises taking mental health days and consistently emphasises the importance of looking after oneself, reinforcing a culture where wellbeing is valued just as much as results.
Making Cloud Feel Less Cloudy
For Jamie, marketing is not just about campaigns or content. It is about telling the AWS story in a way that feels approachable and meaningful. She turns complex Cloud concepts into ideas clients can actually connect with. Her support stretches from start-ups finding their feet to businesses realising their website is still living in the early 2000s.
Busting the “You Must Be a Geek” Myth
“You do not need to be a developer or engineer to understand Cloud solutions. Non-technical roles are essential, and learning across departments is invaluable. Anyone who tells you otherwise probably also thinks braai is just about sausages,” Jamie mentions.
Her hands-on approach of learning, networking, taking certifications, and paying attention at events ensures the whole team grows together.
Why We’re Not Your Average Tech Company
Not only does she embody the company’s culture in her work. She pours herself into her team and the clients she serves, and it shines through every single day. As she explains it: “We educate non-technical team members in AWS, leverage decades of combined experience, and operate ethically. Our people-first approach ensures we see the bigger picture for clients and fulfil our mission of taking care of families.”
Life Beyond Work: Gaming, Learning, and Living Fully
Outside the office, Jamie is a gamer, esports fan, and lover of psychology, philosophy, and culture. Gaming keeps her reflexes sharp for split-second decisions and big-picture strategies, handy for both marketing campaigns and often dodging chaos in the Big Beard Teams chat.
The Future in Focus: Cloud Visionary in Action
Jamie’s vision is simple but powerful. She wants a team that is confident, curious, and thriving, ready to tackle any challenge. With her guiding our marketing, we are not just keeping up with the Cloud. We are shaping how our clients and everyone else experiences it, one story at a time, all with a smile, a joke, and the occasional “love you guys.” which, I’ll admit, is starting to grow on me.
